Basilica San Marco
The remarkable Basilica
of St. Mark is the most exotic of Europe's cathedrals
with reflection of Byzantine connected to the Venice.
The church served as the official chapel of Doge until
1807.
The Columns of Marco and Todaro
In the piazzetta San Marco, facing the lagoon,
stand the two Columns of Marco and Todaro, two splendid
monoliths of red and grey oriental granite, surmounted
by veneto byzantine type capitals.
The Procuratie and Napoleonic
Wing
The Procuratie are the arcaded buildings that
surround the Piazza, and they are so called because there
were in them the houses of the Procuratori of San Marco,
the highest representative magistrature after the Doge.
Now under their arcades there are many fine shops of all
kinds, the world famous Cafe Florian and Cafe Quadri and
the most luxurious jewelries of Venice like Nardi and
Missiaglia.
Doge's Palace
This building symbolizes the government of Republic of
Venice. It was the home of rulers and the headquarters
of highest magistracies of the Serenissima; it remains
one of the most admirable pierces of Venetian Gothic architecture.
